Professor Joo received his BA and MA degrees from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Yonsei University.
He also has an MA degree from the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D. degree from the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. At EIC, he teaches courses on East Asian culture, literature, and society. He also taught courses relating to Western and Japanese colonialism, Korean society and culture, and Korean literature and language at the University of Chicago and the University of Texas at Austin before joining EIC. His research interests lie in modern Chinese history and culture, Chinese intellectual history and journalism, and the history of Sino-Korean relations.
